Visiting day/El dia de visita

Much like in prison Sunday is the day for family visits along the border fence. The California state park on "the other side" is closed on orders of the Border Patrol every day except Sunday.

The other side/El otro lado

On the US side of the border fence it is a no man's land.

Approaching the 2nd fence with the 1st fence in the background and Tijuana beyond.

The 2nd fence is formidable.

La barda 2a es formidable.

And the Border Patrol is watching.

Y la migra estan miranda.

Chicano Park

Sometimes one has to give a nod to the other side. The murals in Chicano Park in barrio Logan are one of my favorite things about San Diego.

Irony/Ironia

This is the wall in Playas de Tijuana where it divides what used to be a binational park enjoyed by the people of Mexico & the United States much as similar parks are still enjoyed by the people of Canada & the United States.

On the Mexican side there is a monument that says: "Close to this site is the first point of the border between Mexico & the United States established the 10th of October 1849. Today the flag of Mexico is raised again to symbolize friendship between the people of Mexico & the United States and to commemorate the idea of a natural park together on both sides of the border. September 27, 1974. National Program of Nature Parks. Secretary of Public Works." Well, you can see that that idea didn't survive the Clinton administration and NAFTA and with the arrival of the wall the flag and flagpole were removed. Ironically the monument remains.

Picking up garbage/Recoger la basura

There is a substance abuse rehabilitation house in Playas that collects funds in the line to cross into the USA. If you have crossed you have seen them in their white uniforms. Every Monday, as part of their mission and rehabilitation they clean all the garbage from the beach and beach walk. Since they began cleaning the beach I have been giving them some change and telling them it is because of their beach cleanup. Perhaps you will want to encourage this as well when you cross the border.

On pelicans & plastic/Sobre pelicanos y plasticos

Sea creatures including pelicans often cannot tell the difference between plastics and food. Styrofoam and other plastics are not very digestible and kill many animals of the sea every day. I particluarly love pelicans. Please recycle your plastic garbage and pick up someone else's, saving the life of a pelican.
