Sadly, this report is pretty accurate. Most visitors to Tijuana will not see this side of the city, however, since it is located away from our historic center.
As the video suggests, respect for the worker needs to be a worldwide concern. In San Diego, for example, both the Sheraton Marina and Hotel W routinely fire chambermaids for injuries received on the job: how they manage to do so year after year is a legal mystery.
On a brighter note, if only tourism might pick up, we'd be able to offer employment more responsive to the workers' rights enumerated in Article 123 of the federal constitution.
I am a bookseller with about 20 years experience, having taken up the trade after retiring as a trial lawyer. I deal exclusively in books on Mexico & bullfighting. I am sole proprietor of my shop in Playas de Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. I am also the list owner for The Bibliophile Mailing List, an email discussion list of book dealers, collectors, librarians, & others interested in the book trade.
My unfulfilled ambitions are first, to play violin with such artistry as to make a Spanish Gypsy cry and second, to survive with grace in the arena with a full grown toro bravo.
