Sewage problems/Los problemas del drenage

In general Tijuana's sewage system is better than most of Mexico and most of Latin America. Most of the city is uphill and up river from San Diego and as a result the United States has put some money into Tijuana's sewage treatment. Nonetheless about 1/3 of its houses have no sewers, and of course, sometimes sewers break. Living on the beach underlines that everything goes downhill. A few days ago a local sewer line broke forcing the closure of the north half of the beach for several days.

In two places raw sewage spilled onto the beach.

But the sewer & water agency did get right to work on the problem.

Because of a strong south to north current our end of the beach, the south end, was not closed and the current cleaned up the north end within 4 days.

A New Documentary Film/Nuevo Cine DOcumental

Last night we attended the Mexican premiere of the documentary On The Edge, a film about the continuing murders of women in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, where more than 450 women have been killed with the authorities having done little to investigate the murders. The story is horrifying and the analysis sobering. If you have the opportunity to see the film, take advantage of it.

Yesterday I had my first 2 hours of surfing lessons. Carlos, my teacher, owns the surf shop across the walkway from our home on Pasaje del Rocio, just above the Boardwalk in Playas de Tijuana. Lessons and equipment rental for two hours are US$20.00.

I am trying to stand up! Maybe I can learn this.

!Estoy tratando de estar de pie! Tal vez puedo aprenderlo.

It is harder than I thought. Two hours is a long time.

Es mas dificil que me imaginaba. 2 horas duran mucho tiempo.

Festival Part 2/Festival Parte 2

The mayor opened the festival. Here he is with his wife and other dignitaries, but most important his god-son Alejandro Amaya, Tijuana's top matador.

Yesterday (Sunday) was the 25th Festival of Fish & Seafood in Playas de Tijuana. It was also a very hot day in the city and even hotter in Tecate & Mexicali. Playas was a very crowded place. This week will be pretty much dedicated to the festival with perhaps one day of photos of me learning to surf. Here are some photos of the standard beach food.

Puppets/Titeres

I know I am not the only one who loves Mexican puppets. I've had friends say, "Oh, they are still just like my parents brought me back from Mexico." These are hanging in the Artisans Market in downtown Tijuana.

117th Anniversary of Tijuana/Aniversario 117ta de Tijuana

Last weekend to celebrate Tijuana's 117th birthday & as a benefit for DIF (a municipal agency like Family Services) the mayor's wife hosted three days of bullfights.

The mayor is in the black cowboy hat, his wife to his left.

Friday night began with 2 examples of fighting bulls from horseback.

La tarde de viernes empezo' con 2 rejonadores.

The bull is always the most important part of the corrida.

Siempre es el toro lo mas importante.

A mystery/Un misterio

These two photos were shot 3 days ago in the morning through the US border fence from Mexico to the US. On top of the bluff is a US Border Patrol jeep which is pretty much always there to keep folks from entering the USA without documentation. The fellow at the bottom of the bluff was spraying something on the plants very near the border. As you can see his white pickup has no kind of governmental or commercial insignia or logo.

Who is he? Who does he work for? What is he spraying? Is it harmful to the environment? Is it harmful to people? How far does it drift? What other questions should I be asking?

If you have any answers or any suggestions as to where to find the answers, please post them here. Thank you.

Gracias.

Commercial murals/Murales comerciales

I enjoy public art and usually find commercial murals more interesting than monumental civic sculpture. These are from Colonia Libertad in Tijuana.

Sunny Sunday/Domingo con sol

On a sunny Sunday in July Playas de Tijuana is quite popular and very cheerful.

Note the U.S. border fence in the background and the fact that no one is enjoying the U.S. beach. Even though it is a state park the U.S. Border Patrol has cut off almost all access to it.
