Saint Cecilia Square/Plaza Santa Cecilia

The downtown square runs one block diagonally from 1st Street & Revolution Avenue to 2nd Street & Constitution Avenue. The lower end where these images of Saint Cecilia are placed is where mariachis wait for jobs and where you come to hire a mariachi band. She is the patron saint of musicians.

Other maquiladoras/Otras maquiladoras

What distinguishes maquiladoras from other factories is the hyper-exploitation of the labor force.

The view west from El Mayor Cucapa

Looking south from the middle of what once was the Colorado River before it was stolen to water Los Angeles & the US southwest. Now it is the meeting grounds for El Mayor Cucapa.

The Cucapa/los Cucapa

A week ago Saturday in El Mayor Cucapa was the annual meeting of the Cucapa nation, an indigenous people along the Colorado River whose territory cuts across the US/Mexico border.

Maquilas/Foreign Owned Factories

Tijuana, more than anything, is a factory town. The statistics change rapidly but the number of maquilas (highly exploitative, foreign owned factories) is huge. For the best view of life as a worker in a maquila I know of, try to see the new documentary film Maquilapolis.

Turnover is high and jobs are always available.

El Dia de los Muertos/The Day of the Dead

Once again for the Day of the Dead the Coalition for Migrants put an art constructon on The Wall to honor the migrants who have died as a result of its construction.

You can see the National Guard helicopter flying just beyond the wall. The area used to be patrolled by Border Patrol helicopters reminding us that our neighbors to the north have gone from living under a police state to living under a military state.

The completed project by now destroyed by the Border Patrol.
