Braceros

From 1942 to 1964 under the bracero program workers in the United States from Mexico had 10% of their wages witheld to assure their return to Mexico which was to be repaid them in Mexico as they reached retirement age. With very little accounting and apparetntly no sense of responsibility the United States sent that money to Mexico. Apparently it was then stolen from the Mexican treasury. To date the workers have not been paid their 10%, let alone any accrued interest on it.

I have a particular interest in this issue because from 1953 to 1963 I picked crops alongside these Mexican workers. I have actually met one of them who was 19 when I was 10 picking for the same farm.

This group stayed with us for two days as they were telling their stories to the Other Campaign and the 6th Commission of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation and Sub-comandante Insurgente Marcos/Delegado Zero. They are organized nationally to protest the theft of their money and to get it back. They are an inspiration of struggle without giving up. They have been struggling all their lives for their families and they are not stopping now.

Protest about the fence is a constant here. A little of it is formal and organized, most of it is informal and not organized, and some of it is not really conscious.

Nearly spontaneous this lasted about a day before the Border Patrol invaded Mexico and removed it.

With a low tide people delight in stepping into the U.S. with the Border Patrol watching.

Collecting crabs from both sides is an unconscious protest,

And a lot of fun.

Y muy divertido.

Grey Morning, Good Surfing/Amanecer Gris, Surfear Bueno

Sometimes the mornings are grey and the water is cooler now, but still tolerable, this morning 62F, but the waves are good.

For me being in the ocean with all the marine life is the best part of surfing.

Colonia Lazaro Cardenas

It is a typical working class neighborhood built on the slope of the second canyon east of the beach.

People use inventiveness when resources are scare. Here junk tires from the USA become sidewalk steps.

The Migrant Coalition has protested U.S. immigration policies and memorialized the deaths those policies have caused for many years. This memorial art project was constructed on the wall in Playas de Tijuana the end of last week. The Border Patrol had destroyed it by Sunday morning.

Luckily a team of photographers from National Geographic Magazine arrived working on a story on the wall. Thus, the project may accomplish more than the Border Patrol hoped.

The number 4045 represents the number of documented deaths crossing the border in the 12 years since the wall was built.
