Regasifier/Regasifadora

This is the pipeline to take regassified natural gas from the regassification plant in Ensenada to the United States. It crosses Kumiai traditional land, of course without their permission. The plant has been built in Mexico because it was too great a danger for the people of California and they were able to stop its construction. Other than to line a few pockets it brings no benefits to Mexico or the Kumiai. Below the photos are citations for further study.

The monster to the north is a constant presence in Tijuana.

Looking north, waiting for nightfall to cross.

The problem isn't the wall which is nothing but a statement. The problem is the militarization, the jeeps, the helicopters, the planes, the dune buggies, the motorcycles, the Border Patrol, and the Army, all armed. I know of two persons shot to death while crossing this year. It is always open season on migrants.

I do not understand the symbolism of this photograph but it says something to me. The lighthouse is just inside Mexico. Its only purpose is to aid U.S. shipping. There is no port in Tijuana.

The fish market/La pescaderia

Remember, prices are pesos per kilo, e.g., fresh oysters for US$2 per pound more or less and fresh crab a bit less. (Divide by 11 to go from pesos to US$ and again by 2.2 to go from kilos to pounds.) Fish & seafood is fresh daily, delicious and plentiful in Tijuana.

Homeland Insecurity/La Migra

A border patrol van driving along the "Berlin Wall" on the U.S. side toward the gates.

A full load of deportees came out in chains to be marched into Mexico.

I am sorry the photos are not better. They do not want pictures of the militarization of the border taken (on either side). There are signs saying it is illegal to take pictures but that seems a clear violation of the First Amendment. Nonetheless I am glad I don't know who took these.

Ground squirrels/Ardillas terrestres

A family of ground squirrels moved into the water meter at the shopping center, providing a very cute metaphor for the housing crisis in Tijuana. (Ground squirrels are our commonest wild land mammal in Playas.)
